Israel Warns of Escalated Strikes on Gaza Over Kite Launches

Must read

The Israeli government has issued a warning to escalate “targeted strikes” on Gaza if Hamas fails to prevent the launching of kites towards Israel by Palestinians, including children.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement on social media, mentioned a recent meeting with Defence Minister Israel Katz to address the threat posed by drones, balloons, and kites from Gaza. Netanyahu emphasized that if the launches do not stop immediately, Israel will intensify targeted strikes against those responsible and evacuate civilians from areas used as launch sites.

Netanyahu stressed that Israel will not tolerate any threats from Hamas or any other entity in Gaza that jeopardize the safety of Israeli communities. Meanwhile, 13-year-old Omar Halawa expressed how flying kites brings some joy amidst the ongoing conflict, emphasizing that they are children seeking happiness without any harmful intentions.

Prior to the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas, Israel reported incidents of burning kites and balloons causing fires and damage. Recent Israeli strikes resulted in casualties, including two children, following a request from the U.S. to reduce attacks. The conflict has led to significant casualties on both sides, with Israel and Gaza reporting different figures.

Hamas condemned Israel’s actions, accusing them of planning aggression and displacement. The group called for international condemnation and urged for adherence to a ceasefire agreement. Concerns have arisen among Gaza residents about potential bans on children’s activities due to security concerns raised by Israel.

Despite the tensions, children in Gaza continue to fly kites, seeking moments of normalcy amid the challenging circumstances.
