“Knife Crime Plummets: Progress Report from Policing Minister”

Must read

In my role as Policing Minister, I vowed to combat knife crime and enhance public safety. A year later, we are seeing tangible progress in fulfilling that commitment.

Incidents of knife-related crimes are decreasing, lives are being spared, and neighborhoods are becoming more secure thanks to proactive measures taken by the Home Office and law enforcement agencies.

The focus over the past year has been on delivering outcomes rather than just rhetoric. Targeted enforcement and prevention efforts in areas plagued by knife robberies have led to a significant reduction in such crimes.

The establishment of a specialized group to address knife robberies in seven high-incidence areas has resulted in a 15% drop in these offenses since June 2024. This translates to nearly 2,500 fewer robberies, marking a substantial improvement compared to the previous upward trend. Data-driven policing strategies are effectively safeguarding communities and preempting violence.

The success of our County Lines Programme is also notable. These drug networks, which often fuel knife crime and exploit vulnerable youth, have been dismantled in large numbers.

Since July 2024, over 3,000 lines have been shut down, more than 8,200 arrests have been made – including 1,600 line holders facing charges – and about 1,000 knives have been confiscated. Behind these figures are transformed lives: over 4,300 at-risk individuals have been referred for protection, and over 600 children have received assistance through the Catch22 service we support.

These young individuals are breaking free from exploitation and building more secure futures. The impact is evident, with a 25% decrease in hospital admissions for stabbings in areas serving as major distribution points for Class A drugs – equating to 840 individuals.

Moreover, hospitalizations due to drug misuse have significantly declined, signifying real-life implications of families spared from anguish and communities infused with hope. This progress is the result of deliberate planning and evidence-based decision-making.

By implementing initiatives like knife surrender programs, we have removed close to 60,000 knives from circulation. Our innovative Hex mapping technology has enabled pinpointing of localized high-risk areas for serious knife crimes, facilitating more effective policing and targeted interventions in collaboration with local stakeholders.

Violence Reduction Units are actively engaging with families and schools to steer young people away from criminal activities, while over 50 Young Futures Panel initiatives are proactively intervening to protect those most vulnerable.

We have also heeded the voices of those most impacted by these dreadful crimes. Ronan’s Law, championed by Pooja Kanda in memory of her son Ronan who fell victim to a fatal stabbing in 2022, has led to tougher penalties for offenders and enhanced safeguards for victims – sending a clear message that knife crime will not be tolerated.

Stricter age verification checks for online knife purchases are closing existing loopholes exploited by criminals. Additionally, we are exploring the implementation of a licensing scheme to restrict access to knives for criminals and young individuals.

The battle against knife crime is ongoing, but the achievements of the past year demonstrate the potential when government, law enforcement, and communities come together. Every surrendered knife, every dismantled County Line, every safeguarded child contributes to saving lives and securing futures.

We have shifted the trajectory from escalating knife crime to declining instances, and we remain committed to eradicating serious violence from our communities, ensuring every young person has the opportunity for a safer tomorrow.
