Lando Norris has revealed his decision to display the number one on his McLaren car in the upcoming season. Norris secured the 2025 Formula 1 drivers’ title by surpassing Max Verstappen, finishing third at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to clinch the championship by a two-point lead over his Red Bull rival.
In a recent interview with Sky Sports News, Norris confirmed his switch from his previous number four to the prestigious number one for the 2026 campaign. He emphasized the tradition and pride associated with the number, highlighting that it symbolizes the collective effort of the McLaren team, including his mechanics and engineers.
Verstappen, who previously used the number 33 on his Red Bull, expressed interest in adopting the number three, last used by Daniel Ricciardo. However, FIA regulations mandate a two-year absence from F1 before a driver can reclaim a specific number.
While many champions opt for the number one to commemorate their victories, Lewis Hamilton, with seven titles, has stuck with his iconic number 44, aligning it with his personal brand similar to Norris. Norris’ championship win ended Verstappen’s 1,457-day reign as the supreme ruler of F1 and concluded a 5,505-day period where every world champion drove for Red Bull or Mercedes.
Jenson Button was the last non-Red Bull or Mercedes driver to claim the championship before Norris, following his 2009 victory with Brawn GP. Norris, who has been with McLaren throughout his F1 career, expressed his desire to secure the title with the team from the start, becoming the first driver in F1 history to achieve a championship after completing over 150 races for the same team.
