“Lisa Nandy Defends BBC Against Trump’s ‘Fake News’ Claim”

Must read

Lisa Nandy has dismissed Donald Trump’s assertion that the BBC is “100% fake news” in the midst of a dispute over an edited Panorama documentary. The BBC is set to address the matter on Monday, with the Culture Secretary expressing her full trust in the corporation’s leadership.

The controversy revolves around edited clips from President Trump’s speech on January 6, 2021, the day of the Capitol attack by his supporters. Last October, the BBC aired the speech as part of a Panorama documentary.

Reacting to Trump’s claims of “100% fake news,” Nandy deemed the accusations “extremely serious” but disagreed with the characterization. She emphasized the importance of the BBC, stating that it plays a crucial role globally, especially through its World Service, in providing information and perspectives that shine a light in regions lacking free and open discourse.

Nandy acknowledged being firm with the BBC when it falls short of editorial standards and addressed various concerns raised, not limited to the Panorama program. She highlighted the gravity of allegations of systemic bias in the BBC’s reporting on sensitive issues.

Additionally, a dispute arose over the weekend between Boris Johnson and BBC presenter Nick Robinson after the former PM accused the broadcaster of “arrogance” and attempting to “destroy” the corporation through a political campaign.

Robinson, host of BBC Radio 4’s Today program, acknowledged concerns about editorial standards and errors within the broadcaster while noting a simultaneous effort by some to undermine the BBC’s credibility.
