Pedro Rodrigues Filho, also known as Pedrinho Matador or “Killer Pete,” was a notorious serial killer in his country and a figure that inspired a complex anti-hero character on television.
He claimed to have ended the lives of more than 100 individuals over five decades, with official convictions for 71 murders. Spending over 40 years in prison, he gained a reputation resembling a modern-day “Robin Hood,” targeting drug dealers, gang members, and other criminals.
Born on October 29, 1954, in a rural Brazilian town, Pedro’s life was marred by violence from the beginning. His skull was fractured before birth when his father assaulted his pregnant mother during an argument, shaping his future actions, as per his own account.
Leaving home at nine, Pedro drifted to São Paulo, engaging in a life of theft and homelessness. By his early teens, he allegedly committed his first murder, which set the stage for a series of violent acts that followed.
In his late teens, he moved to the outskirts of São Paulo and became involved in the local narcotics trade. After a series of retaliatory killings, Pedro was eventually apprehended in 1973 at the age of 18, having left behind a trail of victims.
Sentenced to 128 years in prison, Pedro’s time behind bars further darkened his reputation as he continued to take the lives of fellow inmates. Despite receiving an extended prison term, he was released in 2007 due to legal constraints on jail time.
Throughout his life, Pedro’s transformation from a notorious killer to a reformed individual was marked by religious conversion, where he embraced Christianity and sought redemption. He even started a YouTube channel to caution viewers against criminal behavior and promote the importance of redemption.
Despite his efforts towards rehabilitation, Pedro met a violent end on March 5, 2023, when he was fatally shot and stabbed by unknown assailants outside a family member’s residence. His life story, reminiscent of fictional characters, served as inspiration for various literary works and TV adaptations.
Pedro’s unique code of ethics, only targeting those he deemed deserving of punishment, resonated with audiences and contributed to the narrative of several creative works.
