Conservationist Mark Thomas recently highlighted the remarkable contribution of a single male bird in preserving a rare species in the United Kingdom. The male, known as AU, has been pivotal in sustaining the population of Montagu’s harriers in the UK by fathering 16 offspring, with 10 born in the past two years.
Montagu’s harriers, migratory birds that breed in Europe, face global population decline, and in the UK, their numbers have dwindled significantly over the years. The male bird, AU, has shown exceptional mating behavior, attracting multiple females and successfully raising six chicks with two mates this year.
