A town in Weatherford, located just west of Oklahoma City, is currently undergoing a mass evacuation due to a hazardous chemical spill resulting from a truck accident. The incident, which occurred late on Wednesday evening, has led to the hospitalization of 36 individuals due to exposure to the toxic substance. Emergency services are on-site managing the situation as authorities have warned that the air quality in the vicinity is unsafe.
Witnesses reported that emergency personnel, equipped with gas masks, have been going door to door to evacuate residents from their homes. Weatherford Emergency Manager Mike Karlin mentioned that the cleanup efforts have been challenging due to unfavorable weather conditions, lacking the necessary wind and heat to disperse the spilled chemical effectively.
Residents have described a pungent odor in the affected area, with reports of respiratory distress symptoms. Authorities were alerted to a potential chemical leak at a Holiday Inn Express parking lot, where individuals exhibited signs of respiratory distress. As a precaution, schools in Weatherford have been closed, and classes at Southwest Oklahoma State University have been canceled for the day.
An emergency alert has instructed a partial evacuation of the city with a safety location designated at Pioneer Cellular Center. The public has been advised to seek medical attention if experiencing any symptoms related to the chemical exposure.
