McDonald’s customers are expressing frustration following the announcement of significant changes to the fast-food giant’s loyalty program. The adjustments will require more points to redeem free items through the MyMcDonald’s Rewards program. Currently, customers need 5,500 points to claim items such as a Big Mac, Double Fillet of Fish, Double Sausage and Egg McMuffin, and Nine Chicken Nuggets.
Starting March 17, the points needed for these items will increase to 6,500 points, with customers earning 100 points for every £1 spent at McDonald’s. Similarly, the points required for items like a Medium Coffee or Small Fries will rise from 1,500 points to 2,000 points.
For items such as a regular McFlurry or an Apple Pie, the points threshold will climb from 2,500 points to 3,500 points. Furthermore, to redeem a Double Cheeseburger or a McChicken sandwich, customers will now need 5,000 points, up from 4,000 points.
In response to customer concerns, a McDonald’s spokesperson stated that the loyalty scheme changes were necessary due to increasing food and supply costs. They emphasized that while the points requirements have been adjusted upwards, several popular items are now available for redemption for the first time, including Chicken Selects, Cheese sides, and a new Sausage Sandwich, offering customers more choices.
The loyalty scheme modifications coincide with the launch of McDonald’s new menu, featuring innovative offerings like the Surf N’ Turf burger and the Chicken Cheeseburger. Additionally, customers can enjoy new items like the Espresso Milkshake and Chilli Cheese Bites.
