An urgent warning has been issued to millions of iPhone and Android users by O2 regarding a new scam targeting UK customers. The fraudulent message, being received by users, falsely claims that their SIM cards are on the verge of deactivation due to a failure to accept updated Terms and Conditions. The scam employs urgent language and appears to be sent from an official O2 number, adding to its deceptive nature.
Users with O2 SIM cards should be vigilant for a message stating, “O2UK: IMPORTANT: Your SIM Card(s) will be inactive on 04/06/2026, because you have NOT signed our Terms and Conditions. Logon to sign.” This message contains a link directing recipients to a fake website aimed at stealing personal information for potential illicit access to accounts.
Customers who receive such messages should avoid clicking on any links and instead verify the legitimacy of the message by accessing their accounts through the official O2 channels or contacting the network directly. Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud Prevention at Virgin Media O2, emphasized the increasing sophistication of scammers in their tactics.
Virgin Media O2 is actively working to combat scams by implementing measures such as blocking scam texts and websites, enhancing fraud monitoring on online accounts, and encouraging individuals to report suspicious messages promptly. O2 has also provided advice to help customers protect themselves, including avoiding responding to texts requesting acceptance of new Terms and Conditions or threatening SIM deactivation, being cautious of urgent language in messages, and refraining from clicking on unexpected links.
To ensure security, customers are advised to verify the sender of messages, refrain from clicking on links in unsolicited texts, and immediately change passwords if login details have been compromised. It is crucial for users to stay vigilant and follow recommended safety practices to prevent falling victim to scams.
