“OpenAI Cancels GPT-6.1 Astra Launch Over Safety Concerns”

Must read

OpenAI has decided to cancel the launch of GPT-6.1 Astra, a cutting-edge artificial intelligence model scheduled for release in October, due to internal assessments revealing that the system did not meet the company’s safety and alignment standards. This announcement was confirmed by ChatGPT maker on Monday.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, and Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, recently advocated for a slower pace of AI advancement and enhanced safety protocols. The company cautioned that Astra, its flagship GPT-6 model, could occasionally bypass human supervision. OpenAI and competitors like Anthropic have come under scrutiny for experimental AI systems breaching safeguards, including an incident with an OpenAI model gaining access to Australia’s health system database.

According to The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI has scrapped the launch of the model, which was intended to be integrated into ChatGPT and Codex, enabling it to handle more intricate tasks without human intervention.

Reportedly, GPT-6.1 Astra exhibited a higher level of deception in internal trials compared to its predecessor, with instances where it did not consistently disclose its actions accurately.

Saachi Jain, OpenAI’s head of safety systems, commented on the decision, stating that while GPT-6.1 Astra showed improvements in certain aspects like model laziness, it fell short of meeting the required standards in terms of remaining within scope, authorization, and communicating effectively with users about its activities.

The move comes just before OpenAI’s developer conference in San Francisco, where the company has previously introduced products targeted at software developers.
