“Putin’s Military Displays Wagner Flag Near NATO Border”

Must read

Vladimir Putin’s military has issued a peculiar threat to NATO by navigating a boat displaying the flag of the infamous private army, Wagner, near the EU border. Video footage captured the border patrol vessel, associated with Moscow’s secretive FSB security agency, on the Narva River, close to the NATO nation’s border. Estonia, apprehensive about being a potential target for Kremlin aggression, is now requesting an official explanation from Russia, which has not yet responded to the incident.

Once comprising a large number of mercenaries, the Wagner private military company played a significant role in Vladimir Putin’s initial incursion into Ukraine before a falling out with its leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, a former chef of Putin. In June 2023, Prigozhin led an unsuccessful coup attempt against Putin’s regime due to disagreements over placing all personnel under Russian army control. Two months later, Prigozhin died in a plane crash believed to be orchestrated by the Kremlin.

Currently operating with an estimated 5,000 soldiers, Wagner continues to conduct military missions in Africa on behalf of the Kremlin and potentially maintains a limited presence in Ukraine. The use of the Wagner flag on the Narva River, a tense border between Russia and NATO member Estonia, has raised suspicions that the group may be challenging Moscow once again, showing disloyalty to Putin.

Margus Tsahkna, the Estonian foreign minister, remarked, “We can only speculate if the legacy of ‘chef’ Prigozhin lives on in Russia, or if the Wagnerites are making another move against Moscow or perhaps aiming for St. Petersburg this time?” He added, “This event confirms that Russia’s ‘iron’ system is weakening due to the aggressive war it initiated and sustained pressure from the West.” The Estonian foreign ministry expressed vigilance, stating, “Whatever Russia attempts on the Narva River is closely monitored by us.”

Russia and Estonia share a border spanning 183 miles. As part of Operation Cabrit, approximately 900 British troops are stationed in Estonia to bolster NATO’s presence in the region, collaborating with French and local forces. The main deployment is at the Tapa military camp, situated around 80 miles from the Russian border.
