“Quebec’s Maple Syrup Reserve Depleted, Industry Seeks Government Support”

Must read

Quebec’s maple syrup producers’ association is facing a challenge as the province’s strategic syrup reserve has been depleted due to high demand. Luc Goulet, the president of Québec Maple Syrup Producers, emphasized the necessity of government assistance to support the industry’s growth potential.

The maple syrup industry’s stability relies on weather conditions affecting syrup yields, prompting the establishment of a strategic reserve by the producers’ association to maintain price and supply consistency. Last year, U.S. commercial customers stockpiled syrup due to concerns over potential tariffs by former President Donald Trump.

Goulet revealed that the reserve has been completely utilized as sales continue to surge, raising concerns about potential customer losses if unfavorable weather conditions impact maple sap production. He cited past instances in 2007 and 2008 when stock shortages led to market loss as consumers shifted to alternative sweet products.

Louis Turenne, the president of the Maple Industry Council representing authorized buyers, highlighted a rise in Quebec maple syrup exports, with a significant increase in 2025 amid tariff threats. Despite a slower export growth rate in 2026, Turenne expressed optimism about the industry’s potential for expansion.

Goulet acknowledged the positive challenge of meeting consumer demand and underscored untapped opportunities for industry growth in Quebec’s maple groves. He emphasized the need for increased investments from Quebec City to support producers and processors in exploring new international markets.

Turenne emphasized the importance of diversifying export markets beyond the U.S., noting progress made in recent years. He advocated for accelerating market development in Europe, Australia, and Asia to reduce dependence on the U.S. market.

The maple syrup industry is predominantly concentrated in Quebec, contributing significantly to the province’s economy and employment. The sector’s substantial economic impact, as outlined in a recent industry report, underscores its vital role as a key employer and revenue generator in Quebec.
