The much-awaited El Niño has arrived, and it is proving to be as impactful as predicted. Earlier this year, climate experts had foreseen the development of an El Niño in the central Pacific region. Subsequently, multiple models started indicating the likelihood of a robust or “super” El Niño, although it was cautioned that certainty was premature.
In its June update, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) confirmed the emergence of warmer conditions in the specific Niño 3.4 region of the Pacific Ocean, essential for classifying an El Niño. Temperatures in this zone must surpass 0.5°C above average to qualify as an El Niño, but current ocean temperatures are nearly 2°C above average, setting a record for this time of year.
Climate scientist Zeke Hausfather from Berkeley Earth noted that temperatures in the Nino 3.4 region have exceeded 2°C, typically the threshold for a very strong or “super” El Niño. This suggests that the current conditions are already indicative of a powerful El Niño, despite it being early July.
El Niño and La Niña are part of the larger natural cycle known as the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the Pacific Ocean. La Niña brings cooler temperatures while El Niño results in warmer conditions. Forecasts suggest the El Niño may peak in October, although most models indicate a peak in November or December, implying significant developments in the months ahead.
The record-breaking strength of this El Niño is reminiscent of the 2015-2016 event when ocean temperatures deviated by approximately 2.75°C. The rapid transition from La Niña to El Niño this year has raised questions, with meteorologist Nat Johnson highlighting the swift change in conditions within a year.
Speculations about a peak El Niño exceeding 4°C above average initially seemed implausible to Hausfather, but recent developments suggest otherwise. The possibility of breaking historical El Niño records by a substantial margin raises questions about the role of climate change, although consensus on this topic is yet to be reached.
Potential impacts of this El Niño on food security in tropical regions and wildfire risks in Canada are causes for concern. Hausfather emphasized the seriousness of preparing for significant consequences, emphasizing the substantial implications of El Niño on agriculture, natural ecosystems, and oceanic environments.
