“Reviving Family Tradition: Bonding over Meals on the Beige Mat”

Must read

Growing up in Delta, B.C., one of my cherished childhood memories involves family dinners enjoyed on a small beige mat. The setting sun would cast a warm glow, as we relished delicious Pakistani dishes like biryani and butter chicken with homemade naan. Seated in a circle, we shared stories and bonded over this tradition passed down from my father’s upbringing in Lahore to our suburban life in B.C.

Over time, as my siblings and I became busier with work, school, and sports, the tradition of gathering for family dinners faded away. It had been more than a decade since we had last sat on that humble mat until Thanksgiving when I decided to revive it. Inviting friends of diverse backgrounds to join us, we recreated the circle on the floor, enjoying Thanksgiving dinner together.

The experience was heartwarming, with my father joining us and explaining the significance of this tradition. It bridged the gap between our cultural heritage and Canadian customs. Inspired by this reunion, my family decided to resurrect the tradition, cherishing the togetherness it brought despite our hectic schedules.

Now, as the sun sets, we often find ourselves back on the beige mat, prioritizing dinner time as a sacred moment to bond. Whether on the floor or around a dining table, the essence of togetherness prevails, reminding us of the importance of family ties for generations to come.
