Must read

Sass Jordan, the renowned rock vocalist hailing from Montreal with a career spanning nearly four decades, has passed away at the age of 65.

According to a statement from family representative Eric Alper, Jordan died on Friday surrounded by her loved ones, although the cause of death has not been disclosed. The statement hailed Jordan as a unique force of nature and an incomparable source of light and happiness.

In 1988, Jordan released her debut album, “Tell Somebody,” and the following year, she clinched the Juno Award for most promising female vocalist. Her second album, “Racine,” launched in 1992, featured hits like “Make You a Believer.”

Having been nominated multiple times for the Juno Award for best female vocalist, Jordan also served as a judge on all six seasons of the reality TV series “Canadian Idol.”

Born on December 23, 1960, in Birmingham, England, Jordan was raised in Montreal. Geoff Kulawick, former president of Stony Plain Records, the label behind Jordan’s last two albums, lauded her as “bold, beautiful, and courageous.”

Under Stony Plains, Jordan collaborated with her husband Derek Sharp on her 2020 album, “Rebel Moon Blues,” and her 2022 release, “Bitches Blues.”

Kulawick expressed his admiration for Jordan even before she joined his label, noting how he encouraged her to showcase her blues prowess on her final two records. Her emotionally resonant voice garnered her a strong fan base.

Derek Downham, a Canadian producer and songwriter, shared his fond memories of Jordan, emphasizing their connection when they first met at Toronto’s Massey Hall. Downham praised Jordan’s vibrant personality and humor, recalling their performance together last December at a charity concert in Montreal.

As one of the few female figures in the rock scene at the outset of her career, Jordan played a pivotal role in paving the way for other women in a predominantly male-dominated industry. Downham commended her for breaking through during challenging times and setting an example for aspiring female artists.

Jordan’s legacy as a trailblazer and a beacon of love in the music industry serves as an inspiration to budding performers. Downham hopes that Jordan will be remembered for her compassionate leadership and her unwavering dedication to music.
