Samsung has recently introduced its latest series of innovative foldable smartphones, potentially posing a challenge for Apple. The tech giant from Korea has unveiled three new devices, led by the brand-new Galaxy Z Fold 8, featuring a completely revamped appearance.
In a departure from previous Fold models with a tall cover screen and square main panel, Samsung has embraced a shorter, wider “passport-style” design. Although it may seem peculiar when closed, the new shape becomes intuitive upon unfolding.
The device boasts a spacious 7.6-inch display resembling a compact tablet more than a smartphone, catering to activities like streaming movies, binge-watching series, and mobile gaming.
The launch holds significance as Apple is anticipated to introduce its first foldable iPhone later this year, with speculations hinting at a similar radical design choice. Should these rumors materialize, Samsung would have gained an early advantage over its major competitor.
Beyond design, Samsung is also leading in other aspects. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 stands out as the thinnest and lightest Fold to date, weighing only 180g. It features an enhanced hinge for increased durability and reduced risk of long-term damage.
Upon unfolding, the extended display incorporates Vision Booster technology and an anti-reflective coating to enhance visibility under bright sunlight. Powering the device is Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, coupled with a 4,800mAh battery capable of fast charging to 63% in just half an hour.
The phone’s camera system offers solid photography capabilities, while Gorilla Glass enhances durability against scratches and accidental impacts. Samsung has integrated its latest Galaxy AI tools for improved photo editing, productivity functions, and enhanced search capabilities.
Priced starting at £1,699, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is now open for pre-orders, contrasting with Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone, expected later this year at a potentially higher price point exceeding £2,000.
Aside from the Fold 8, Samsung has introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, resembling the previous Fold 7 in appearance but incorporating upgrades such as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip and significant camera enhancements. The rear camera setup now includes a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP telephoto camera, promising improved low-light photography and 8K video recording.
The Fold 8 Ultra features a new Flex Titanium hinge and an improved display structure for increased strength and refinement. Samsung claims to have minimized the notorious crease, with a smoother and more natural unfolding mechanism.
With a larger 5,000mAh battery offering extended usage, the device can charge up to 67% in approximately 30 minutes, and it is priced starting at £1,899.
Completing the lineup is the Galaxy Z Flip 8, maintaining Samsung’s popular clamshell design but now thinner and lighter. Enhancements include an improved external cover display, a stronger aluminum hinge, enhanced performance, and upgraded camera features.
