A suspect has been taken into custody following an incident where multiple vehicles were set on fire at the residence of a Scarborough Member of Parliament, as reported by Toronto law enforcement. Roshvin Crofton, aged 24, was apprehended on Sunday and faces charges including arson causing property damage, mischief exceeding $5,000, conspiracy to commit a serious offense, possession of combustible materials, and violation of probation terms, according to a press release issued by the police on Friday.

A 2025 Hyundai Sonata, which is believed to be linked to the occurrence, was confiscated. Authorities are seeking information on the whereabouts of the vehicle in the days leading up to the alleged arson. Additionally, law enforcement is on the lookout for a second suspect connected to the incident.

The arson took place in the driveway of Liberal MP Salma Zahid’s residence, who represents the Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East federal riding. An unidentified individual reportedly approached the vehicles early on August 27, poured an accelerant on two of them, causing a fire, and then fled the scene. The flames damaged a third vehicle as well.

Zahid expressed gratitude towards the Toronto police for the arrest and charges made in connection to the arson incident. She mentioned that while the investigation continues, the motive behind the attack remains unknown. Zahid, a Liberal member of parliament since 2015, chairs the standing committee on science and research and serves as the vice-chair of the Canada-China legislative association.

Various political figures, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, condemned the incident, labeling it as a “cowardly act of violence and intimidation.”
