The Federal Court has mandated the disclosure of previously hidden segments from a pivotal September 1986 investigation crafted for a significant federal inquiry on wartime atrocities. Federal Court Justice Simon Fothergill, in a recently unveiled decision, directed the government to reveal previously censored sections of the study concerning the relocation of suspected Nazi war criminals in Canada post-World War II.
B’nai Brith Canada has advocated for the publication of more excerpts from the report authored by researcher Alti Rodal over an extended period. In February 2024, Library and Archives Canada unveiled additional segments of the report following a request for access to information from B’nai Brith. Nonetheless, Library and Archives continued to withhold certain content, including sections addressing the involvement of American intelligence agencies in aiding the settlement of Nazi collaborators in Canada.
Fothergill, in his judgment, dismissed the government’s assertion that disclosing specific additional details would adversely impact Canada’s diplomatic relations.
