“TfL Rejects Women-Only Tube Carriage Proposal”

Must read

Transport for London (TfL) has provided an update in response to a campaign led by Camille Brown, a 21-year-old student at UCL, calling for the introduction of women-only tube carriages on the London Underground. The petition initiated by Brown has gathered over 9,500 signatures, nearing the 10,000 mark that would prompt a government response. Despite the growing support for the campaign, TfL has confirmed that there are no current plans to implement women-only carriages.

Siwan Hayward, Director of Security, Policing and Enforcement at TfL, emphasized the importance of ensuring safety for all passengers while stating TfL’s stance against the proposal for female-only train carriages. Hayward highlighted the collaboration with law enforcement to enhance security measures across the transport network and encouraged individuals to report any incidents of harassment for swift action against offenders.

Reports indicate a concerning rise in sexual offences on public transportation in London, with TfL disclosing 2,671 reported sexual offences between February 2023 and January 2024. The surge in reported incidents coincided with a post-pandemic increase in passenger numbers and a campaign to raise awareness about anti-harassment measures.

A survey conducted by the British Transport Police revealed that a significant portion of women have experienced harassment while commuting, aligning with findings from a Girlguiding survey indicating a growing sense of insecurity among young female passengers. Brown highlighted the persistent issue of public harassment on the London Underground in her petition, urging for concrete actions to address the safety concerns.
