The tragic incident occurred near their affluent residence. Law enforcement responded to a report of a distressed male voice shouting ‘Mama’ from a nearby wooded area, leading to the discovery of the gruesome crime scene.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers encountered Van Stockum, who was covered in blood on his face, clothes, and hands, and promptly detained him. Laura sustained severe head injuries, including blunt-force trauma and a fractured skull, with a bloodied hammer found nearby. Despite efforts to revive her, she succumbed to her grievous wounds at the scene.
During questioning, Van Stockum allegedly admitted to the killing, expressing that he used various methods, including a knife, a hammer, and his fists. Laura, a single mother and antique dealer, resided with her son in their $1.9 million mansion in New Canaan, Connecticut, prior to the tragic event.

In a separate case, Lorenz Kraus, 53, confessed to burying his parents, Franz and Theresia Kraus, in the backyard of their Albany residence during a televised interview. The couple had been missing since 2017, with investigators discovering their remains following Kraus’s startling admission.
