The cost of the TV licence is set to increase once more. However, if you no longer require a TV licence, you may be eligible for a refund.
Currently priced at £174.50 annually, the TV licence fee will be raised to £180 starting in April. Having a TV licence is mandatory for watching or recording live TV, as well as for viewing any content – live or on-demand – on BBC iPlayer.
If your viewing is limited to on-demand shows via streaming platforms other than BBC iPlayer, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5, a TV licence is not required.
However, if you watch live broadcasts through these services, then owning a TV licence is necessary. Failure to comply with licensing regulations could result in a fine of up to £1,000.
In case you no longer need your TV licence before its expiration, you might be entitled to a refund if there is at least a month remaining on it.
Refunds are also available for individuals eligible for concessions like over 75 or blind concessions. Remember, failure to have a valid TV licence when required could lead to a penalty of up to £1,000.
