“Water bills in England and Wales to rise by £33/year”

Must read

Water bills for households in England and Wales are set to increase by an average of £33 per year starting this April. This represents a 5.4% hike, equivalent to £2.70 per month, surpassing the current inflation rate of 3.4%.

Regulator Ofwat had previously authorized water companies to hike average bills by 36% over a five-year span until 2030. Water UK stated that these increases are necessary to finance a £104 billion investment initiative aimed at enhancing infrastructure and preventing sewage leaks. However, critics argue that the rising bills will pose challenges for families already grappling with escalating expenses.

Water UK announced that an additional 300,000 households are anticipated to benefit from social tariffs in 2026/27, bringing the total number of supported households to around 2.5 million. Social tariffs offer discounted rates for water and sewerage services, with an average discount expectation of 40%.

David Henderson, Chief Executive of Water UK, emphasized the importance of the increased funds for crucial upgrades to secure water supplies and combat sewage pollution. Mike Keil, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council for Water (CCW), highlighted concerns about the affordability of water bills and the necessity for transparent spending of customer funds.

Ofwat’s interim Chief Executive, Chris Walters, assured that companies would be held accountable for their performance and financial commitments. While acknowledging the financial strain on some consumers, he mentioned the doubled support available for those struggling to pay bills, benefiting over 2 million households.

Although switching water providers is not an option, there are ways to save on water expenses. Simple actions like reducing shower time and turning off taps when not in use can make a significant impact on bills. Additionally, individuals can explore free water-saving devices offered by Save Water Save Money and consider installing a water meter for potential savings.
