A woman, Marcy L. Oglesby, has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for killing her long-term boyfriend, Richard “Rick” Young, by poisoning him with eye drops. Oglesby, 53, was found guilty of murder and aggravated battery after it was revealed that she had been slowly poisoning Young’s food and coffee over the span of a year, causing his death in the autumn of 2021.
Young’s remains were discovered in a storage unit rented by Oglesby in Maquon, Illinois, on October 7, 2022. Initially charged with concealment of a non-homicidal death, the case faced legal obstacles, including charges being dropped and reinstated due to insufficient evidence.
Detective Gregory Jennings uncovered the truth with the help of Karen Doubet, who lived with the couple. Doubet confessed that she and Oglesby conspired to poison Young and revealed details of the crime, leading to the discovery of discarded eye drop bottles and other incriminating evidence in the couple’s home.
Despite Oglesby’s attempts to cover up the murder by claiming Young died from Covid, a toxicology report confirmed the presence of eye drop ingredients in his body. Doubet’s cooperation in exchange for dropped charges shed light on the sinister plot orchestrated by Oglesby.
After a bench trial, Oglesby was found guilty of murder, and her sentencing marked the end of a complex legal battle. Throughout the proceedings, Oglesby maintained her innocence, denying the murder allegations despite overwhelming evidence against her.
