The authorities were notified about the situation when the toddlers were brought to the nursing station of Garden Hill Anisininew Nation around 2 p.m. the following day. Family members found the boys in a nearby lake and safety officers from the First Nation transported them to the nursing station where they were pronounced deceased.
The RCMP stated that the children likely wandered from their home and entered the lake, with no suspicion of foul play involved. Alex McDougall, the grand chief of Anisininew Okimawin representing the four First Nations in the Island Lake area, expressed condolences and solidarity with the family during this difficult time.
