Baroness Helen Newlove, the Victims’ Commissioner, has sadly passed away following a brief illness. Known for her unwavering fight against antisocial behavior after her husband was tragically killed by yobs in front of their family, she was a dedicated advocate for victims and witness rights.

David Lammy, the Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary, expressed deep sorrow at the news. He praised Baroness Newlove, also serving as the Deputy Speaker in the House of Lords, as an exceptional public servant characterized by courage, compassion, and a strong commitment to justice.

In 2007, Baroness Newlove’s husband, Garry, was fatally attacked by a group of intoxicated youths while attempting to protect their property. This tragic incident followed a series of escalating abuse and violence directed at their family in Padgate, Cheshire.

In a recent interview with The Mirror, Baroness Newlove emphasized the importance of believing and listening to victims of heinous crimes like murder, rape, and domestic violence. She highlighted the critical need for victims to be treated with dignity and respect, underscoring the significance of having their voices heard.

Following her husband’s death, she dedicated herself to combating antisocial behavior and promoting safer communities. Recognized for her contributions, she was appointed Government Champion for Active, Safer Communities in 2010, working closely with local residents to enhance community safety and address local challenges. In the same year, she was honored with a peerage by then-Prime Minister David Cameron.

In 2021, Baroness Newlove assumed the role of Deputy Speaker in the House of Lords, where she continued her advocacy for victims’ rights. Having previously served as Victims’ Commissioner from 2013 to 2019, she returned for a one-year term in October 2023 to ensure victims’ voices were heard.

David Cameron, the former Prime Minister who ennobled Baroness Newlove, expressed deep sadness at her passing, praising her resilience, warmth, and dedication to serving victims of crime and ensuring their voices were heard.
