Keir Starmer has emphasized that any form of attack on a member of his Cabinet is entirely unacceptable amidst reports of leadership plotting aimed at Wes Streeting.
This statement marks Starmer’s first response following the emergence of intense briefing conflicts at the government’s top echelons. The Prime Minister also commended the Health Secretary’s performance, with Streeting refuting claims of orchestrating a coup against Starmer, sparking speculations about the Prime Minister’s future.
During the PMQs session, Starmer lauded the Health Secretary’s efforts in reducing NHS waiting lists. However, his assertion of Cabinet unity drew laughter from the Tory benches. He reiterated his team’s dedication to serving the country, highlighting the commitment of his chief-of-staff, Morgan McSweeney, and the rest of his top aides.
Responding to Tory leader Kemi Badenoch’s question about Streeting’s criticism of a purported toxic culture within Downing Street, Starmer reaffirmed his focus on national rejuvenation. He firmly denounced any attacks on his Cabinet members as unacceptable.
Starmer praised Streeting for surpassing expectations by delivering five million additional appointments in the first year of a Labour government, exceeding the initial pledge of two million.
Streeting defended himself on Wednesday morning, dismissing any notions of planning a leadership challenge or a move against the Prime Minister. Drawing a comparison to a recent TV show, he expressed unequivocal support for the PM, emphasizing the need for unity within the party.
In an interview with Sky News, Streeting criticized the recent briefing as counterproductive, likening it to a TV program. He labeled it as the most severe attack on loyalty since a recent sports event, backing the Prime Minister wholeheartedly.
