“White Supremacist Associate Convicted of Savage Murder”

Must read

An American man associated with white supremacists has been convicted of a brutal murder initially mistaken for a bear attack. Daren Christopher Abbey was found guilty of savagely killing Dustin Kjersem using an axe, a block of wood, and a screwdriver in October 2024 at Dustin’s campsite near Big Sky, Montana.

Initially, the discovery of Dustin’s body led to suspicions of a bear attack, but wildlife agents ruled out this possibility after finding no signs of any animal in the vicinity. Abbey’s involvement was uncovered when his DNA was detected on a beer can inside Dustin’s tent.

According to Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer, Abbey claimed he acted in self-defense after Dustin, whom he did not know, allegedly assaulted him when he arrived at the campsite. However, prosecutors discredited Abbey’s self-defense story citing inconsistencies and the severe injuries Dustin sustained.

After a six-day trial, Abbey was convicted of deliberate homicide and evidence tampering for stealing Kjersem’s belongings and attempting to cover up the crime. Although the charges could carry a death penalty in Montana, the prosecution has opted not to seek capital punishment in this case, as confirmed by Jack Veil from the Gallatin County Attorney’s Office.

Abbey’s defense attorney, Sarah Kottke, mentioned that Abbey will decide whether to appeal the conviction after his sentencing on December 30. Kottke acknowledged the challenge of presenting an affirmative defense in a remote area without witnesses to the events.

Prior records revealed Abbey’s association with a white supremacist group and his tattoos of a swastika and iron cross. Dustin, a self-employed contractor who built homes and learned various trades, left behind two children, as per his sister’s account.
