Brazilian police are facing accusations of decapitating a teenage gang member in a violent crackdown just ahead of the COP30 summit and Prince William’s visit. The incident occurred during a major raid in a favela, where the gangster’s head was reportedly hung from a tree as a warning. In response, criminal groups retaliated by using drones to attack the police.
Officials have reported a death toll of 119, with 115 suspected to be gang members and the remaining four identified as police officers. Residents of the Complexo da Penha favela have raised allegations of severe misconduct by the police following the operation in Rio de Janeiro.
A mother, Raquel Tomas, claimed that her son was brutally killed by the police, stating that he was decapitated and his head displayed as a trophy. She emphasized the need for suspects to be arrested without being subjected to extrajudicial executions.
The intensified crackdown coincided with Brazil hosting the COP30 summit and welcoming international leaders, including Prince William. A police spokesperson defended the actions, citing the escalating violence faced by law enforcement, characterized as narco-terrorism rather than ordinary crime.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stressed the necessity of combating criminal organizations that pose a threat to civilians, urging coordinated efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks while safeguarding innocent lives. Concerns have been raised about potential violence during Prince William’s visit, following recent clashes and the deployment of additional security forces.
With the global spotlight on Brazil in the coming days, there is heightened vigilance amid fears of further unrest in the region.
