“Comedian Income Plummets as SiriusXM Revamps Comedy Channels”

Must read

Comedian Liz Miele recently faced a significant income reduction, echoing the plight of many others in her field. SiriusXM made the decision to discontinue its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, which previously showcased more than 800 comedians, and introduced a new channel under the ownership of renowned comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.

This change has left Miele and numerous working-class comedians without a vital revenue stream and platform, as affluent celebrity comics now dominate the airwaves. Miele shared her financial struggles, emphasizing the channel’s crucial role in sustaining many comedians during tough times.

While Maniscalco and SiriusXM have assured that the new channel will offer opportunities to comedians at various career stages, industry advocates, like Stand Up for Standup, highlight contrasting statistics. Previously, Raw Comedy aired material from over 800 comedians monthly, with each receiving $15 US in royalties per spin. However, the revamped channel featured only 275 comedians last month, with the top 50 artists receiving over 75% of plays.

Miele expressed concern over the channel’s shift towards favoring a select group of high-earning comedians, emphasizing the negative impact on diversity and financial support within the industry. The absence of platforms like SiriusXM could hinder emerging comedians’ chances of success, limiting the industry’s growth potential.

Canadian comedian Danish Anwar shared how his royalties from Raw Comedy dropped by up to 40%, affecting many colleagues who relied on these earnings. The situation is particularly challenging for Canadian comics seeking careers in the U.S., as SiriusXM royalties are essential for maintaining work visas.

In response to the backlash, Maniscalco clarified that he was not involved in the decision to end Raw Comedy, affirming his commitment to providing a platform for comedians of all levels on his channel. While optimistic statements have been made, Anwar remains skeptical, emphasizing the immediate financial impact on comedians’ livelihoods.

The importance of collective action and advocacy within the comedy industry was highlighted by Toronto-born comedian Steph Tolev, who urged U.S. comedians to learn from past Canadian experiences in influencing programming decisions. Despite challenges, solidarity and advocacy for fair pay and industry practices offer a potential silver lining amid the financial setbacks faced by many comedians.
