“Fatal Gunfight Erupts in Crete Village”

Must read

Two individuals lost their lives and a minimum of six others sustained injuries in an incident involving gunfire on the Greek island of Crete over the weekend. The event commenced around 11am and was triggered by an ongoing family dispute in the village of Vorizia, situated approximately 32 miles south of Heraklion, the island’s primary city.

Confirming the fatalities, law enforcement revealed that a 39-year-old male and a 56-year-old female perished during the exchange of gunfire. Emergency services from EKAB reported that six additional individuals were swiftly transported to nearby medical facilities with injuries of varying degrees. Currently, two injured men are hospitalized and are being closely monitored by authorities as their involvement in the armed altercation is being probed.

Following the gunfight, a significant deployment of security personnel and emergency response teams was dispatched to the small mountain village. A preliminary inquiry has been initiated by the authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly.

Reportedly, this violent clash is the latest development in a long-standing feud between two local families, with previous tensions escalating to an explosion at an unfinished residence on the preceding night, though no injuries were reported from that event.

According to Greek public broadcaster ERT, the animosity between the families stemmed from disputes over grazing lands, which were previously settled through private mediation, a common practice in rural Crete. The conflict reignited when a member of one family acquired property to construct a house in an area predominantly controlled by the other family, as per local sources.

The property where the explosion occurred was allegedly built on the disputed land.
