“Hurricane Melissa Threatens Caribbean Devastation”

Must read

Hurricane Melissa is poised to inflict widespread destruction this week as it sweeps through the Caribbean, unleashing powerful 175mph winds and even stronger gusts. The storm, mirroring the pressure level of Hurricane Katrina upon its Caribbean landfall, has tragically claimed the lives of seven individuals. Jamaican and Haitian authorities have reported three fatalities each, while the Dominican Republic mourns one death, with an additional person currently missing.

Given Melissa’s alarming potential for devastation, meteorologists are closely monitoring its path as it is forecasted to make landfall in multiple nations imminently. According to the latest data from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the hurricane was positioned approximately 115 miles southwest of Kingston, Jamaica, and 290 miles outside Guantanamo, Cuba, this morning. The storm is anticipated to reach Jamaica’s southern coast in the coming hours.

Expected to arrive during the early hours, Melissa is projected to traverse the island diagonally, entering near St Elizabeth parish in the south and exiting around St Ann parish in the north, as per meteorological forecasts. Preceding the storm, the government issued warnings of catastrophic damage, with Prime Minister Andrew Holness emphasizing the lack of infrastructure capable of withstanding a Category 5 hurricane’s impact.

Reports of landslides, fallen trees, and widespread power outages have surfaced prior to the storm’s arrival, prompting Jamaican officials to caution that the cleanup and damage assessment processes will be protracted. A life-threatening storm surge of up to 13 feet is anticipated across southern Jamaica, raising concerns about the vulnerable coastal hospitals.

Health Minister Christopher Tufton disclosed the relocation of patients to higher floors in preparation for the storm’s onset. The NHC’s latest update underscores the imminent “catastrophic” impact expected in Jamaica. Highlighting the severe winds, the warning states the likelihood of structural failures, particularly in elevated areas where wind speeds could be significantly intensified.

Forecasted to bring substantial rainfall, Melissa is projected to unleash between 15 to 30 inches of rain in various regions of Jamaica and southern Hispaniola by Wednesday. The NHC’s warnings emphasize the potential for catastrophic flash flooding and landslides, urging residents to exercise caution. Additionally, eastern Cuba is expected to experience torrential rainfall, leading to life-threatening flash floods and landslides.
