Chatting with residents in any community will reveal that the rising cost of living is a major concern for many. This issue has always been a priority for me, whether it’s advocating for more affordable infant formula or helping families avoid predatory lenders.
Recently, I embarked on a journey across the country to engage with our dedicated Iceland team and millions of customers, culminating in the ‘Iceland Manifesto’ released before the last election. Our research showed that people feel disconnected from politicians and are grappling with the high costs of essentials like childcare, veterinary care, heating, and groceries. The pressing issue of affordability persists, dominating people’s daily struggles.
As I transition into a Labour peer, my primary goal is to bring a practical perspective from the retail sector to the political arena, amplifying the voices of businesses and communities nationwide. I am eager to contribute my insights as a business owner and entrepreneur, drawing from my experience running a family business that provides jobs and offers affordable, quality food to millions.
Having firsthand knowledge of the challenges faced by businesses in meeting payroll and the everyday pressures on families to put food on the table, I aim to bring a unique perspective to policymaking. The current Labour Government has prioritized economic growth and committed to removing barriers that hinder progress, recognizing that private enterprise plays a crucial role in driving growth through investment and a supportive regulatory environment.
While I don’t claim to have all the solutions, I firmly believe that active participation from individuals deeply invested in the issues leads to more effective governance. In my new role, I will continue to advocate for practical solutions and transparent communication to address the pressing concerns of our society.
