“Michael J. Fox Honored with Companion Title in Order of Canada”

Celebrated actor and advocate for Parkinson’s disease, Michael J. Fox, expressed feelings of “pride” and “humility” as he was honored with a promotion within the prestigious Order of Canada on Friday. Attendees at Rideau Hall gave a standing ovation to Fox as Governor General Louise Arbour formally bestowed upon him the title of a companion of the Order of Canada.

According to Rideau Hall, Fox was elevated to the companion level in recognition of his impactful global advocacy and candidness regarding Parkinson’s disease. Following the ceremony, Fox shared his sentiments with The Canadian Press, emphasizing his deep-rooted love for Canada and its values, which have shaped him into a uniquely Canadian individual.

Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative nervous system condition characterized by tremors and stiffness, is often associated with depression and cognitive impairment. Fox, who disclosed his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1998, has been actively involved in raising awareness and funding for research on the disease, while openly discussing the challenges faced by those affected.

During a discussion, Fox praised Canada’s contributions to Parkinson’s research, highlighting the advancements made in treatments like deep brain stimulation within the country. He was part of a group of 51 individuals inducted or promoted within the Order of Canada on the same day.

Governor General Arbour commended each honoree for their exceptional contributions, emphasizing the importance of using one’s talents for the betterment of society. She singled out Fox as a shining example of utilizing talent and influence for the common good, emphasizing the necessity of courage and determination for sustainable progress.

In addition to Fox, other notable figures recognized by the Order of Canada include mechanical engineering professor Yusuf Altintas, pediatric neuro-oncology expert Nada Jabado, former Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz, sculptor Ruth Elsie Abernethy, journalist Susanne Craig, music director Colin Roswell Clarke, playwright Marcelle Dubois, and submarine expert Patrick Joseph Lahey. Each individual was acknowledged for their significant contributions to their respective fields.
