Quebec Demands Justice for Boy Denied Medical Care

Must read

Quebec officials are expressing indignation following the tragic passing of a four-year-old boy in the Nunavik village of Ivujivik amid allegations that the child was refused medical care.

In a press statement released on Thursday, Québec Solidaire representative Sol Zanetti demanded accountability regarding the demise of Jusi Padlayat, who reportedly passed away on August 3 after his parents sought medical assistance for his stomach discomfort at the local clinic on multiple occasions but were allegedly turned away.

According to an interview with La Presse, Padlayat’s grandmother, Annie Mangiuk, claimed that medical personnel disregarded the family’s concerns and advised them to administer Advil or Tylenol to the boy. Mangiuk revealed that Padlayat was discovered unconscious on August 1, taken to the local nursing station, and later transferred to the Montreal Children’s Hospital, where he tragically succumbed two days later.

Zanetti condemned the prolonged suffering of a child as unacceptable and raised concerns of possible neglect, urging a thorough investigation into the matter, including any potential systemic racism within the healthcare system. The Quebec Liberal Party (QLP) also called for enhancements to healthcare services in northern regions, proposing increased telemedicine options to address the issue.

The tragic incident has prompted discussions about the need for enhanced cultural sensitivity and respect in healthcare services, drawing parallels to the case of Joyce Echaquan, an Atikamekw woman who recorded staff making racist remarks at a Quebec hospital before her passing. Efforts are underway to investigate the circumstances surrounding Padlayat’s death, with both internal and external reviews planned by the Inuulitsivik Health Centre and the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services, as well as an ongoing investigation by Quebec’s coroners office. The Montreal Children’s Hospital declined to provide specific details on individual cases.
