Prince William and Gordon Brown have teamed up to raise awareness about homelessness and showcase how it can be prevented. The charity led by the former Labour Prime Minister is supporting the Prince of Wales by providing essential household items like cookers, fridges, washing machines, and utensils for homes.
Brown mentioned that their collaborative effort with major UK retailers aims to combat homelessness by transforming houses into welcoming homes for families in need. He praised Prince William for following in the footsteps of his mother, Princess Diana, who championed various causes including HIV/AIDS awareness and the campaign against landmines.
The duo’s joint initiative, Homewards, is a five-year program focused on reducing homelessness occurrences. Brown’s Multibank scheme, established in Fife in 2021, redistributes surplus goods such as bedding and clothing to those facing poverty. The partnership will furnish 250 homes across six regions with the support of prominent companies like B&Q, Bosch Home Appliances, DFS Group, and IKEA.
According to Brown, the provision of furnishings like fridges, cookers, and bedding, as well as toiletries, is crucial for families struggling with homelessness. Properly furnished homes not only instill pride but also serve as a preventive measure against further homelessness.
Reflecting on his involvement in homelessness initiatives, Prince William highlighted his visit to a homeless charity with his mother in 1993 and emphasized the importance of everyone having a secure home. He acknowledged his privilege but stressed his commitment to using his position to aid those in need.
Hazel Detsiny, from The Royal Foundation, commended the collaboration between industry players to address homelessness comprehensively. Homewards seeks to engage businesses from all sectors to tackle the root causes of homelessness, including housing, financial stability, and employment. Together, they aim to demonstrate the positive impact of corporate involvement in solving societal challenges.
