Top-ranked tennis player Jannik Sinner has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming U.S. Open due to an ongoing right knee injury. Sinner, who recently clinched his second consecutive Wimbledon title by defeating Alexander Zverev, had to skip the hard-court tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati as part of his recovery process.
In a statement released on Friday, the 25-year-old Italian expressed his disappointment at not being able to compete in the U.S. Open, which commences on August 30. Despite intensive efforts from his team and medical staff, Sinner acknowledged the need for more time to fully recuperate from his knee issue.
Sinner, the reigning 2024 U.S. Open champion, faced a setback last year when he was defeated by Carlos Alcaraz in the final. Alcaraz, who had been sidelined with a right wrist injury since April, confirmed his readiness to participate in this year’s tournament in New York.
The intense rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz has been a highlight in men’s tennis, with the pair meeting in the last three Grand Slam finals in 2025. Alcaraz emerged victorious in their most recent encounter, claiming a four-set win in New York and ending Sinner’s title defense following his triumph over Taylor Fritz in the 2024 final.
Sinner, who has enjoyed a successful season with a record of 44-3 and six titles, faced a notable setback at the French Open earlier this year. Despite his early exit in Paris, Sinner made a strong comeback at Wimbledon, securing his fifth Grand Slam title.
This marks the first time Sinner will miss a Grand Slam tournament since his debut at the U.S. Open in 2019.
