According to Parton, she encountered a little girl with red hair, green eyes, and fair skin who introduced herself as Jolene during the early stages of her career. This encounter supposedly sparked the idea for the song that she promised to write about the girl.
While Whelan does not recall the specific conversation, she vividly remembers meeting Parton in 1972, a year before ‘Jolene’ was recorded. At the age of 10, Whelan attended a country music concert at Disneyland where she approached Parton for an autograph, particularly drawn to her song ‘Coat of Many Colors.’
