In the frigid Arctic Circle, the Royal Marines are gearing up for combat. These highly trained soldiers endure rigorous winter exercises in Arctic warfare and survival at Camp Viking, a secluded base in northern Norway. While the activities in this icy landscape may seem distant from the UK, they play a crucial role in safeguarding the security of Britain, the Nordics, and Europe, as emphasized by Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper during her recent visit to the base.
The presence of British and Norwegian forces in the region serves as both a deterrent to Russia and a readiness for potential military engagement. Recent attention has been drawn to Arctic security due to US President Donald Trump’s controversial remarks about acquiring Greenland to counter Russian and Chinese threats in the Arctic. The melting of sea ice due to climate change has opened up new sea routes and exposed valuable mineral resources, including Greenland’s rare earth deposits, which are vital for modern technologies.
In response to Russia’s disruptive actions and threats to Europe, the UK and its allies are intensifying their efforts in the Arctic. However, there is also a need to dissuade President Trump from pursuing aggressive actions, as any military intervention in Greenland by the US could jeopardize NATO’s defensive alliance, given Denmark’s membership in the organization. Expect increased focus on Arctic affairs in the coming year.
