WhatsApp is addressing a major inconvenience by introducing a new feature that allows users to set unique usernames instead of relying solely on phone numbers for communication. This change, long-awaited by users, aims to enhance privacy and convenience in chatting on the platform.
According to WhatsApp, the current practice of sharing phone numbers can be daunting when connecting with new acquaintances, be it classmates, neighbors, event contacts, or group chat members. The introduction of usernames will offer a more casual way to chat without disclosing personal phone numbers.
The update not only promotes individual privacy but also enhances group conversations by allowing users to engage in community chats or social groups without immediately revealing their phone numbers to unfamiliar individuals.
To secure their preferred usernames before the full launch, users are encouraged to update WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to Settings > Account > Username. Given the platform’s massive user base, early reservations are advised to increase the chances of obtaining the desired username before it gets claimed.
The rollout of this feature will occur gradually in the upcoming months, with WhatsApp notifying users once usernames become available in their respective regions.
