A construction worker was saved after being stuck beneath debris at an ancient tower in Rome. The incident occurred during renovation work at the Torre dei Conti near the Colosseum. Emergency responders carefully extracted the worker using an aerial ladder and a stretcher, transferring him to an ambulance. His condition was uncertain, though Rome’s firefighters chief commander mentioned that he was conscious.
The rescue operation was complex due to ongoing collapses during the extraction process. Rescuers encountered challenges as they attempted to reach the worker through various methods, including using drones and large tubes to clear rubble. The tower’s structural damage was a result of two separate collapses affecting different sections of the building.
Mayor Roberto Gualtieri emphasized the cautious approach taken by the rescue team to prevent further structural instability. Three other workers were safely rescued, while one worker was hospitalized in critical condition. Fortunately, no firefighters sustained injuries during the rescue efforts.
The Torre dei Conti, a historic tower closed since 2007, is currently undergoing a significant restoration project. The restoration includes essential upgrades and the installation of modern systems. Prior inspections confirmed the building’s stability, allowing the restoration work to progress.
Italian authorities are investigating potential charges related to the incident, focusing on negligence. Witnesses, including a German student, observed the dramatic rescue operation near the Colosseum. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed hope for the worker’s successful rescue, extending sympathies to the affected individual and their family.
Meloni commended the bravery and dedication of the law enforcement and rescue teams involved in the challenging operation.
