“Teacher Murders Boyfriend’s Daughter in Bathtub”

Must read

An atrocious incident unfolded when a wicked nursery school teacher raped and killed her boyfriend’s four-year-old daughter, culminating in a disturbing final act of drowning the child in a bathtub. The perpetrator, Amber Lee Hughes, confessed to the murder of young Nada-Jane Chalita, driven by her unfounded suspicions of her partner’s infidelity.

On January 23, 2023, Elie, Nada-Jane’s father, entrusted Hughes with his daughter while he attended a job interview in Johannesburg. Hughes, consumed by jealousy due to Elie’s departure without bidding farewell, forcibly submerged the child in the bathtub until she succumbed to drowning.

Initially denying any involvement in the murder, Hughes later pleaded guilty during her trial, revealing that she left Nada-Jane’s lifeless body in the filled bathtub. Messages exchanged prior to the tragedy indicated Hughes’ premeditated intentions, with her threatening Elie and following through with the heinous act.

The court learned about Hughes’ troubled past and mental health challenges, attributing her actions to a traumatic upbringing and psychological struggles. Despite expressing remorse for her actions in court, Judge Richard Mkabela deemed Hughes’ behavior as premeditated, emphasizing her calculated actions leading up to the murder.

Hughes had entered a relationship with Elie in 2021 and moved in with him and Nada-Jane, where the volatile dynamic included threats towards the child. In August, Hughes was convicted of premeditated murder and vaginal rape, offenses carrying life imprisonment sentences in South Africa.

Elie, devastated by the loss of his daughter, expressed a sense of injustice and disillusionment with the legal process. The victim’s family faced further dismay when sentencing was postponed until February 16, 2026, prolonging the quest for closure in a tragic case that shocked many.
