“Mayor of Uruapan Fatally Shot at Day of the Dead Festival”

Must read

In a shocking incident during a Day of the Dead celebration, Mayor Carlos Manzo, 40, of Uruapan, a city located approximately 251 miles west of Mexico City, was fatally shot by two armed assailants in front of festival attendees. Manzo, known for his strong stance against the violent drug cartels operating in Mexico, had previously made statements advocating for aggressive measures, including the use of “brute force,” to combat the criminal organizations in the region.

Following his tragic death, Manzo’s past comments resurfaced, suggesting he was aware of the risks he faced. Despite the presence of national guard troops at the event, the mayor could not be saved from what security consultant David Saucedo described as a “kamikaze attack,” indicating that the perpetrators were prepared to die in the assault.

President Claudia Sheinbaum and US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau both condemned the assassination of Mayor Manzo, expressing condolences to his family and the people of Uruapan. The incident highlighted the challenges faced by officials like Manzo who confront cartel violence with limited resources.

Manzo’s funeral took place within 24 hours of his death, following the customs observed in many Latin American and southern European countries, such as Spain.
